Tiling
We undertake all aspects of tiling work and are specialists in the installation of ceramic, porcelain, mosaic, natural stone and quarry tiles.
Types of tiles
Ceramic tiles can be glazed or unglazed. Glazed tiles are available plain or decorated and can be used on walls and floors. Un-glazed ceramic floor tiles are more suited to commercial and industrial settings, but can be used in laundries and utility rooms. They are available with a non-slip profile.
Porcelain tiles also known as ‘vitrified tiles’ are ceramic tiles, but with a very low absorbency (less than 5%). They are usually made from kaolin clays, feldspar, silica and colouring oxides and are fired at about 1200ÂșC. Porcelain tiles are hard wearing and can be used on walls or floors both inside and out. They are very good at resisting staining and frost due to their low porosity.
Mosaics are very small tiles, usually less than 3.5cm x 3.5cm. Mosaics can be glazed or unglazed and made from ceramic, porcelain, natural stone or glass.
Natural Stone tiles encompass a large array of different naturally occuring materials; limestone, marble, granite and slate which are quarried from the earth. Some are extremely hard, and some quite soft. Some are porous and will need sealing before grouting and periodically after installation.
Quarry tiles are a traditional product made in the UK for hundreds of years. They are made from natural clay, squeezed through an extruding machine, and then fired. They are mostly available in terracotta, black and white colours.
